Delft was the first capital of the Netherlands and continues to be the country’s cutest old-world city.

Upon the grand city square stands the gothic 15th-century New Church, once the tallest building in Holland; almost all the Dutch kings and queens are buried in its crypt. Opposite the church is the city hall, renaissance in style from the 17th century.

Along the canals the city is older. The Old Church leans, almost impossibly. Beneath the 14th-century stone floor lay the bodies of pirates and Delft’s insalubrious rich from a time of Dutch naval dominancy.

And in between, a city that goes about its day to day life. Cafes, bars, stores, canals. So come take a ride through with your host Stephen Baily.
